The Mass Exodus Has Officially Begun
With the current "collective bargaining agreement"
ending and a new agreement no where in site, next season is hanging in the
balance. With many issues no where near being worked out, both sides and
optimistic, but neither will say when or if a new one will be worked out. "I am
optimistic, but I will not forgo on my plans for change. The game is suffering
under the current structure and must be change in order for the league to
survive. A new deal must be worked out and will be worked out before we can
proceed any farther. I do not wish for any time missed in a season, however
under the current league structure the league could not last much longer." NAHC
commissioner.
Many teams are expecting a cap of some sort and
have informed their higher priced players who are considered expendable for that
very reason, to find a new team. As their contracts expired many players have
done just that. With the higher payroll teams letting some marquee players go to
free agency, most of the players are signing on with the small market teams.
Teams like Minnesota and Phoenix have already made a splash after they announced
the signing of Brian Rolston and Mike Ricci respectively. While Mark Recchi
announced that he is returning back to the team that he won a Stanley cup with
(more then a decade ago) when he signed with Pittsburgh.
Along with that many players have signed tentative
contracts with European squads in case of a lockout. Players like Joe Thornton
have already announced their plans in case of a lockout, while other NHL Stars
such as Jose Theodore are being offered multi million dollar contracts to play
overseas next season. Not too mention that some players are taking consideration
into playing with the soon to be formed WHA, although the WHA has it's own arena
leasing problems it is slated to begin at the end of October. With players like
Brett Hull already considering a no doubter to be leaving the NHL to join the
WHA (seeing how his father is the Commissioner of the WHA), talent seems to be
changing teams faster then you can spell Gretzky.
You must not forget that there are still many players who are without contracts
for next season, players like Joe Thornton, Jarome Iginla, Glen Murray, Dany
Heatly, Illya Kovalchuk, Chris Pronger and Martin St.Louis just to name a
couple. So no matter how long the new CBA takes to get reworked, the NAHC will
be changed forever! |
